Man charged with setting deputy on fire pleads not guilty
RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) - A man who authorities say threw a can filled with flammable liquid at an Ohio sheriff's deputy and set him on fire has pleaded not guilty to charges. The Kent-Ravenna Record-Courier reports 45-year-old Jay Brannon, of Atwater, appeared for an arraignment Friday in Portage County where he faces five counts each of attempted aggravated murder and aggravated arson. Authorities say Portage County Sheriff's Sgt. James Acklin and other officers went to a Rootstown Township address to arrest Brannon last week on felony warrants and found him inside a garage. Authorities say Brannon ignited the can, threatened to "kill cops" and threw the can at Acklin, who was hospitalized with burns and has since been released.
Student abducted, killed had complained to police about man
MANSFIELD, Ohio (AP) - Police records show that a woman abducted from an Ohio college campus and later fatally shot in Kentucky had complained to police about her ex-boyfriend abusing her. The Mansfield News Journal reports that the records include allegations of sexual assault, stalking, harassment and domestic violence between Skylar Williams and Ty'Rell Pounds. Williams was a student at Ohio State University's Mansfield campus where authorities say she was forced into a car at gunpoint last week. Kentucky State Police say Pounds later shot and killed the 20-year-old Williams and a trooper fatally shot Pounds after a chase in Oldham County, Kentucky.
Man admits killing 13-year-old while he was high on meth
ASHTABULA, Ohio (AP) - Prosecutors say a convicted sex offender who admitted killing a 13-year-old Ohio girl while high on methamphetamine has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. Ashtabula (ash-tuh-BYOO'-luh) County Prosecutor Nick Iarocci says the plea spares 48-year-old John Richard Bove from a potential death penalty but also spares Kara Zdanczewski's family from a recounting of her 2017 murder. Bove pleaded guily Friday to charges including aggravated murder and rape. Messages seeking comment were left with Bove's attorneys. WEWS-TV reports a police affidavit indicates Bove told investigators he took the girl intending to trade her back to her family in exchange for a drug debt her father owed.
Police: Woman robs, kills man she met on dating site
GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio (AP) - Police near Cleveland say a woman who went out with a man she met on a dating website came back to his house two days later and robbed and killed him. Members of a U.S. Marshals task force arrested 24-year-old Shakira Graham on Wednesday in Shaker Heights. She's charged with aggravated murder in the December shooting death of Meshach Cornwall. Graham was arraigned Thursday and is being held on a $3 million bond. Court records don't list an attorney for her. Police say she met Cornwall on a dating site and stayed over at his home in Garfield Heights. Investigators say she returned to the home, shot and killed Cornwall and stole guns, a TV, several cellphones and a car.

Suspect's weapon matches bullet that killed Ohio woman
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Investigators in Kentucky say a woman taken from an Ohio college campus was fatally shot with a weapon carried by the man suspected of abducting her. Kentucky State Police Commissioner Richard Sanders spoke Wednesday about the Monday afternoon shooting in Oldham County, Kentucky. The shooting occurred after a police chase. Authorities say 24-year-old Ty'rell Pounds stopped his vehicle and a trooper fired after hearing gunfire from the vehicle. Sanders says it wasn't until Tuesday night that police determined 20-year-old Skylar Williams was shot by the weapon carried by the suspect. Williams was a student at Ohio State's Mansfield campus.
Man gets life in prison for killing ex found in garbage can
CLEVELAND (AP) - A man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and dumping her body in a garbage can at an abandoned house in Cleveland has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. Thirty-six-year-old Yaphet Bradley was sentenced Tuesday in the death of 31-year-old Miriam Johnson, of Cleveland Heights. Bradley had previously pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, gross abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. Messages seeking comment were left Wednesday for Bradley's lawyers. A medical examiner concluded that Johnson died of a gunshot wound to the head and stab wounds to her torso, arms and legs. Investigators say she was killed last year, in late February.
Brecksville mayor to receive 4.5 percent raise after November 2019 election
In January 2020, the mayor of Brecksville will earn $115,000, an increase of 4.5 percent over the mayor's current salary of $110,000. However, it's uncertain who will hold the office of mayor when the raise takes effect. Mayor Jerry Hruby said he hasn't decided whether he will seek re-election this November.

Making his first visit to Cleveland since suffering a horrific broken left ankle in his debut for Boston in 2017, Hayward scored 18 points as the Celtics beat the Cavaliers 103-96 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight victory despite missing All-Star guard Kyrie Irving. A strained left hip prevented Irving from facing his former team, but Jayson Tatum helped make up for his absence with 25 points. Marcus Smart had 17 and Jaylen Brown finished with 13. Hayward came off the bench and made 9 of 14 shots and added six rebounds and five assists in 30 minutes.
